Reading Response 1

“Traveled Domain”

The domain I have chosen is a pathway to the University of Michigan Music School. I walk down this path nearly every day going to classes and rehearsals. Because of the snow it’s a little harder to fully determine the shape of the path, but it still shows how the path itself isn’t straight and has a little bit of curve/meander to its shape. This makes it softer and more fitting to its surroundings. Because it is set in a slightly woodsy area, the flow of the path without straight lines helps it feel more natural in this setting as if there were no path and a traveler was asked to go from the point where the picture was taken to the school. Also, even though the path is paved across the grassy landscape, the darker tone almost makes it feel like laid stone providing some connection to the earthy backdrop. However, even though the path has a certain intrinsic direction, its edges still create borders. The path itself becomes its own space, separated but coexisting with its surroundings. The lamps on the left also provide another degree of separation between the path and the forest (to me they almost look like pillars). The other set of lamps on the right provide a boundary between the clearing and a road. Both sets of these lamps work together to funnel travelers on the path towards the school. The path creates motion while the clearing and the forest contrast with stillness. The lines the path creates, or in this case the plowed snow, highlight its importance and make it a focal point amongst the trees, clearing, and lamps.
