One of the most essential aspects to designing architecture is creating something that people want to look at and can ultimately use. In my course I would teach my students how aesthetics can psychologically impact the viewers and users of the architecture of which they will create. In the opening weeks of my course I will have students visit multiple architectural structures and will have them comment on how the exterior and interior of the structures make them feel: which aspects about it did they like and which they did not. As students begin to establish patterns about what aspects made them feel certain ways, lessons will arise revolving around how color, lighting, spatiality, etc can alter emotions and increase or decrease productivity, should this be a considering factor. I feel that it is extremely important for architects to remember that real people will be using their work once it’s completed and I want to teach this to students in my class. I feel that this would be a beneficial first year course to give students a foundation of knowledge for what their viewers may enjoy seeing/using and what they may not in designing their future work.
